NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) announced today a $100,000 donation to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to support its emergency response to the armed conflict and drought affecting the population of Somalia. The combination of violence and lack of food and water has led to life-threatening conditions for millions of people in Somalia and neighboring countries in eastern Africa.
The donation comes from the Morgan Stanley Foundation, which operates Morgan Stanley’s Global Alliance for Children’s Health. More than half a million children are at risk of dying from malnutrition without medical intervention, according to the United Nations. MSF estimates that the Morgan Stanley donation can help more than 1,200 malnourished children regain their health.
“The disastrous confluence of war and drought in Somalia disproportionately affects and imperils children,” said Joan Steinberg, President of the Morgan Stanley Foundation. “It is our hope that with this donation, Doctors Without Borders will be able to respond to this catastrophe as quickly and effectively as possible. MSF has been active in Somalia since 1991. Over 1,400 Somali staff, supported by approximately 100 international staff, provide free health care, surgery and malnutrition treatment in eight regions of the country. MSF teams are treating more than 34,000 malnourished Somali children inside the country and in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. Medical teams provide healthcare to more than 250,000 refugees in camps outside Somalia.
