The New York Times Knowledge Network and the University of Southern California Join Resources to Provide Continuing Education

NEW YORK--()--The New York Times Knowledge Network (www.nytimes.com/knownow) and The University of Southern California (www.usc.edu) have joined forces to establish and offer a new extensive online continuing education program.

The collaboration will launch with programs in nine areas of study, uniting the comprehensive continuing education catalogs from both USC and The New York Times Knowledge Network. Courses will feature USC faculty in addition to New York Times journalists.

The USC and New York Times Knowledge Network program (www.nytimes.com/usc) offers students tailored, practical programs to enhance their professional paths, and the flexibility of online courses for both working and non-working adults. The nine programs comprise:

  • Writing and Communication
  • Architecture
  • Arts and Culture
  • Cinematic Arts
  • Journalism for High School Students
  • Global Health
  • American Politics
  • Business and Leadership
  • Executive Education

Offerings for the fall 2011 semester include more than 40 online courses. The full course schedule is available at www.nytimes.com/usc.

“Higher education does not start with an acceptance letter or stop with a diploma,” said Elizabeth Garrett, USC’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “As the world changes, new information and new challenges are created. A lifelong quest for knowledge, truth, and innovation is the best way to meet these challenges head-on.”

Courses will be taught by USC faculty with participation by New York Times journalists. Students will also be able to access The New York Times Knowledge Network continuing education course offerings in writing, editing, science and health. Courses are open to all students and adult learners, and they may be taken individually.

A series of six courses in journalism for high school students will also be offered in the fall. Students will have the option of enrolling in one of the two week courses taught by USC faculty with participation by New York Times journalists, or enroll in all six courses to earn a certificate. Schools will also be able to purchase seats in the courses for their students.

On October 13, The New York Times Knowledge Network and USC will officially launch the venture internationally at the USCGlobal Conference in Hong Kong, taking into consideration the extensive number of USC alumni located in Hong Kong, throughout Asia, and various other countries. Interested students will learn more about the specifics of the course offerings and receive information on how to register.

The New York Times Knowledge Network, which uses the EpsilenTM platform, was launched in September 2007 to deliver lifelong learning programs on timely subjects.
